Fish Masala Fry:


½ kg Pomfret/Mackerel/Tiger Prawns
2 tsp. chilly powder
¼ tsp. turmeric
2 tbsp. lime juice
1 onion finely chopped
3 tbsp. oil
1 tsp Ginger garlic Paste
Few curry leaves
Salt as per taste

Masala ingredients: (To grind)
6 Long chillies
5 Short chillies
1 tsp. cumin
1 small onion
2 flakes garlic
1 small tomato
1 tbsp. vinegar

Method:
Cut ,clean fish and set aside. Mix chilly powder, turmeric, lime juice , Ginger garlic and little salt into a paste with  little water if required.  Apply this paste on the fish and set aside for about 30 minutes.  In a non stick pan  heat 1 tbsp. of oil and shallow fry the fish  on both the sides till light brown and set aside.

Grind the masala ingredients into a fine paste.  Heat 2 tbsp. of oil in a heavy bottomed pan.  Fry finely chopped onion with curry leaves till brown.  Add the ground masala and fry till you a get good aroma and oil separates from masala. Add salt as per your taste.  Place the  fried fish over the masala in the pan and coat the fish gently with the fried masala. Cook on slow fire for 5 minutes.

Lighthouse Hill Park(Tagore Park)

Light House Hill park is a beautiful park located in the heart of the city. The garden surrounds a old light house with full of huge trees and flowering plants. One can see ships sailing in the sea and also can watch sunset from here.There is a public library at the base of the light house with a reading room named after Karnad Sadashiv Rao, a renowned freedom fighter.

Kadri Park

Kadri Park is a oval shaped park located on Kadri Hills. Is a nice hangout place / picnic spot. It is the largest park within the city limits of Mangalore. This place also hosts a Flower show organized by the Horticulture Department every year. There is also a 18 inch railway track along which chugs a toy train.
It is 5 Kms away from the city near Air studios (Mangalore Akashavani).

Srimanthi Bai Memorial Museum
City's only museum, which links modern Indian history with the 16th century objects. Col.V.R. Miraskar Mangalorean by birth during one of his posting in pre-Independence India, had stayed in a bungalow he liked it so much that he built an almost exact replica of it at Bejai. Later the State Archaeological Department converted the bungalow into a museum.
The museum is named after the Colonel's mother with many of the exhibits are from his own collection he has collected over 40 years. The house has three floors and its huge teakwood caskets filled with Artifacts ranging from ancient coins, second century stone idols, 18th century brass images, lamps, life-size wooden figures can also be found. You can also find pottery, porcelain and glass from China and Japan. Neolithic tools, palm-leaf manuscripts, puppetry artifacts and a large collection of old paintings are also displayed.

Sulthan Battery
Sulthan Battery is situated in Boloor, 6kms away from Mangalore City Bus Stand. It was built in black stones by Tippu Sulthan to prevent warships from entering Gurpur River. Although it is a watch tower, it gives the impression of a miniature fortress, with its arrangements for mounting canons all around.
In 1784A.D. Tippu Sulthan built the present Sulthan Battery, which was known as Sulthan’s Battery (English word ‘Battery’) in those days. Firing of canons was known as ‘battery’ (English word battery) then.
Sulthan Battery is a perfect example of a place where nature’s beauty blends with man-made beauty in perfect synchrony and lends the entire place various hues of joy and excitement. A feeling of euphoria and tranquility invades a person when one gets there. This, is the reason why Sultan Battery is increasingly becoming a sought after place by the local people and the tourists.

Pilikula Nisargadhama 
Pilikula Nisargadhama is near Mangalore at Vamanjoor spreads across 350 acres of undulating countryside with small pockets of tropical forests. Pilikula literally means Tiger's lake. In olden days, tigers used to come to this lake to drink water. Henceforth, this lake is known as Pilikula.
There is also a huge lake with ducks and swans with a beautiful garden surrounding the entire lake. Boating facility is also available here.
The wildlife found here are panthers, tigers, bears, crocodiles, black-buck and other reptiles may be seen here.
District Administration of Dakshina Kannada promoted this major Eco-education and tourism development project called Pilikula Nisarga Dhama. It is also a integrated theme park with a wide variety. The complex also includes the Manasa Amusement and Water Park.
The purpose of Pilikula was to showcase the coastal culture and rich native heritage of people of Dakshina Kannada district. It is really a must place to visit.









Aloyseum
Aloyseum (St Aloysius College Museum) is a small museum with a large eclectic collection which includes mounted skeletons of wild animals (tiger, panther, antelope and wild boar). You can also see animal bones, skin of animals, skulls and a clutch of ostrich eggs.
The first generator which was used in the city of Mangalore is also seen here. There is a vast collection of vessels and utensils used by Mangaloreans in the pastis also visible here.
However the center of attraction here is the vintage 1906 De Dion the very first automobile to have graced the streets of the city. Old telephones, radios, cameras, clocks, bulbs, telegraph instruments are all on display here.

St Aloysius College Chapel
St Aloysius College Chapel is one of the Major tourist attraction.The Church was built in the year 1882 by the Jesuits is on the lighthouse hill. 
The Chapel is compared to Sistine Chapel in Rome. There are a lot of oil paintings covering the entire ceiling and walls of the chapel depicting the life of St Aloysius and there are also scene from the Bible.All these paintings are gifted by an Italian artist named Antonio Moscheni. The chapels art has been honoured with 2 post age stamps on the occasion of the shrine's centenary celebrations in 2002.

Tannirbavi beach
Tannirbavi beach is one of the best beaches of Dakshina Kannada. One can enjoy the sunset view here. It is located at a distance of 12 Km from Mangalore.






Panambur beach 
13Km from Mangalore on the north of the National Highway is the Panambur beach. Water sports, boating are some of the tourist attractions here.




Surathkal beach
Surathkal beach is known for its clean surrounding and its lighthouse. It is located 16 kms away from Mangalore City. One has to take deviation on the left as one reaches the KREC college ( which is now NITK ) and drive a km towards the beach on the tar road.
The visitors to Suratkal beach are primarily KREC students, and a few local residents. One can climb the lighthouse at Suratkal beach by paying an enterance fee of Rs 5 per head. It is lovely sight of the coastline and one gets to see the refinery at a distance, along with the harbour. The visit to the light house is allowed between 3.30 to 5.30 pm only. On clear weather days, one can view lovely sun setting in the west from Suratkal beach.

Someshwara beach
It is 9 Kms to the south of Mangalore, and 0.5 Km from the Someshwara Bus stand, this beach is well known for the large rocks called "Rudra Shile". The historical Somanath Temple constructed during the regime of the famous queen Abbakka Devi is situated in the north side.



 
New Mangalore Port
New Mangalore Port operates the deep-water, all-weather port at Panambur, Mangalore in Karanataka state. It is the only major port of Karnataka and is currently the ninth largest port in India. It was formally inaugurated on May 4, 1974 by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. The construction began in 1962. The port is situated at Panambur, Mangalore on the west cost of India.It is situated to north of confluence of Gurupura( Phalguni ) river to Arabian sea .It is 170 nautical miles (310 km) south of Mormugao Port & 191 nautical miles (354 km) north of Kochi Port. The port situated in Panambur is called New Mangalore Port, as there is an old harbour or port located in Mangalore city which is called by Mangalore bunder or Hale bunder. The old harbour is located to south of New mangalore port. Old port is now being used for fishing and for ferrying small goods.

Mangalore buns:

1/2 cup over riped mashed bananas
2 tbl spoon sugar
2 tbl spoon yogurt
1/8 tea spoon baking soda
1 and 1/2 cups to 2 cups  maida 
1/2 tea spn cumin seeds (optional)
1/4 tea spn pepper powder (optional)
Oil
Salt
 Add sugar, salt, cumin seeds (optional), pepper (optional), soda and yogurt to mashed bananas. Mix well.
Add Maida flour and mix to make dough. The amount of flour specified is approximate, add enough to make a stiff dough.
Cover it and leave for about 2-3 hrs or in refrigerated overnight
Heat oil. Take small balls of dough and roll into small puris. Deep fry.
Serve hot with Pudina Chutney
